What makes Vera MGRS different from other GPS apps?
Most GPS apps give you a map and turn-by-turn directions. Vera gives you a compass, a bearing, and a distance. You set where you started (SP), you see where you are (PL), you set where you're going (OBJ). One screen, three points, six coordinate formats. It's built for people who navigate by grid reference, not by street name.
How accurate are the calculations?
All distance and bearing calculations use GeographicLib's geodesic algorithms on the WGS84 ellipsoid—the same math used by governments and militaries worldwide. This is not flat-earth approximation or great-circle shortcutting. Coordinate conversions between UTM, MGRS, and Maidenhead are precise to the limits of each format.
Does it work without cell service?
Yes. Every calculation runs on-device. GPS works anywhere satellites are visible. The only feature that touches the network is optional reverse geocoding, which sends coordinates to Apple to resolve a place name. You can disable it in settings.
How do I set a destination?
You can enter coordinates directly in MGRS, UTM, or decimal format. You can also drop a pin on the map. Every location you capture or enter is saved to your history, so you build a library of waypoints over time.
What about battery life?
Vera uses GPS while the app is open and, only while you're actively navigating to an Objective, in the background to keep the Lock Screen display current — iOS shows the standard blue location indicator the whole time. It never records a track log of where you've been. For extended backcountry use, enable Airplane Mode when you don't need cellular—but lock your start point first, since assisted GPS needs a brief network connection for the fastest fix.
Is my location data private?
Your waypoints and routes are stored locally on your device. Location is sent to Apple only for optional reverse geocoding (address lookup), which you can turn off in Settings. There are no user accounts, no analytics, no third-party tracking. You can sync through your own private iCloud database, or choose the Encrypted storage mode to lock the database with iOS Complete file protection whenever your device is locked.
What does the Apple Watch app do?
Tap to capture your current location as a start point. See your coordinates in MGRS or other formats. Check bearing and distance to your objective. The watch runs its own GPS and can capture locations even without your phone nearby—it syncs when reconnected.
What are routes?
Chain two to ten waypoints into a route, then navigate them in sequence. The app auto-detects when you arrive at each waypoint and advances to the next. You can reverse direction, skip ahead, or go back. Route progress shows as a dot strip on the compass screen.
